Male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia accounts for around 95% of male hair loss cases. Males represent about 61% of the demand for hair loss treatments and products. When it comes to hair transplantation specifically, men make up as much as 84.2% of the demand. Dr. Zhou Cheng, Chief Physician of the Dermatology Department at Peking University People’s Hospital, stated that the incidence of androgenetic alopecia is very high—approximately 21.3% of men suffer from male pattern baldness, which means at least one in five men is affected. Among women, the prevalence is around 6%.
(2) Age
With the increasing pace of modern life, many individuals have adopted sub-healthy lifestyles characterized by late nights, sleep deprivation, and high stress. Combined with frequent hair dyeing and poor hair care habits, these factors overload the scalp, leading to dryness, split ends, rough texture, dandruff, and oily scalp—collectively referred to as “scalp fatigue.”
According to Bosley, most individuals with androgenetic alopecia (or male pattern baldness) begin to experience hair loss in their mid-20s. By age 20, about 20% of men have already shown visible signs of hair loss.
New research indicates that in China, hair loss is starting at younger ages than ever before. A 2017 survey conducted by Tsinghua University found that nearly 60% of the 4,068 students surveyed were experiencing varying degrees of hair loss.
As consumers increasingly pay attention to scalp health and sensitive scalp conditions, there has been a notable shift in focus toward hair care and nourishment. Demand for hair care and maintenance has surged. According to AliHealth’s 2017 report “A Fun White Paper on Saving Hair,” post-90s consumers accounted for the largest share (36.1%) of those purchasing hair transplant and hair care products on Alibaba’s retail platforms.
(3) Symptoms
The most common symptom pattern is progressive thinning at the crown. In men, the retreat of the hairline in an “M” shape is common, with 24% of respondents reporting this symptom. In contrast, women’s hair loss usually starts from localized areas rather than the hairline, with only a small proportion (2.6%) reporting a “U”-shaped hair loss pattern.
In addition to hair thinning, 19.8% of participants reported clumps of hair falling out during combing or washing, which may indicate acute stress-related conditions such as telogen effluvium. Furthermore, 13% reported scalp itching, which could suggest underlying skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. A small group (6%) reported shedding more than 100 hairs per day—exceeding the normal daily threshold—while 3.2% reported circular bald patches, potentially indicating autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata.
Notably, 43.8% of respondents reported no obvious symptoms. This group likely includes individuals in the early stages of hair loss or those unaware of the gradual progression.
(4) Regional Distribution
According to a 2023 medihair survey of 4,284 people worldwide, the three countries with the highest male hair loss rates are all in Western Europe: Spain (44.50%), Italy (44.37%), and France (44.25%). Approximately half of the countries on the list are located in Western regions.

The most commonly used treatment method is anti-hair loss shampoo, with 32.6% of respondents having tried some type of shampoo. It is said that even baby shampoos may have a positive effect. The second most common method is scalp massage, used by 13.8% of respondents to combat hair loss. While research in this area is limited, existing studies suggest that scalp massage can lead to thicker hair. It is believed to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, and some believe it stretches follicle cells, thereby encouraging the production of thicker hair.
11.2% of respondents reported using dietary approaches to prevent hair loss, such as consuming more vegetables, fish, and nuts. Sufficient protein intake supports hair growth. Plant-based proteins—such as those from potatoes, soybeans, and grains—are considered more beneficial to the body than animal proteins like meat, cheese, and eggs. Therefore, a balanced diet that includes these foods may help promote hair growth.
10% of respondents take medications to combat hair loss, while 7% use ampoules or topical treatments. Additionally, 6.2% of respondents use dietary supplements to support hair growth. Nutrients such as zinc, biotin, and vitamins A, B1, B12, D3, and C can strengthen hair and nails. On the other hand, a deficiency in vitamin D may lead to hair loss.

According to estimates, the concentration metrics CR5 and HHI for 2024 are 30.17% and 2.10%, respectively, indicating a low market concentration.
